A Few Words

About Us

Shomea is a dynamic, nonprofit organization led by highly trained medical specialists in Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology–Otology, Public Health, Psychology, and Orthopaedics – working together to transform disability inclusion across Sub-Saharan Africa. Over the years, this core has expanded into a powerful multidisciplinary team united by one mission: ensuring that children and adults with hearing and vision challenges are identified early, supported accessibly, and empowered to reach their full potential.

We challenge the status quo

Why We Exist

In Cameroon, just like in most Sub-Saharan countries, there exist no routine international screening programs for babies born, neither for hearing nor for vision.

What We Do

Shomea designs and delivers innovative, scalable solutions that strengthen health systems, influence policy, and improve lives.

Our key initiatives
Revolutionizing routine newborn screening
Through our pioneering COHVIN model, we are integrating universal hearing and vision testing into immunization clinics, giving children the best start possible from the day they are born.
Screening schoolchildren in elementary education
Through early detection at school level to prevent undiagnosed impairments from limiting learning, development, and future opportunities
Expanding access to rehabilitative services
We are working to close the massive service gap in Sub-Saharan Africa through workforce development and deployment of essential assistive technologies.
Reducing road traffic accidents linked to untreated sensory impairment
By identifying and addressing uncorrected vision and hearing problems, we support safer roads and communities.
Promoting disability-inclusive public spaces
From offices to markets, classrooms to clinics, we advocate for accessible environments where everyone can participate fully.
Providing care and support to orphans and vulnerable groups
Our programs focus on creating safe, nurturing environments where every person can thrive, regardless of their circumstances.
Public sensitization and stigma reduction
We work to challenge outdated attitudes and strengthen empathy and societal inclusion.
Influencing policy and national strategies
Shomea collaborates with ministries, private institutions, and stakeholders to shape policies that ensure inclusive communities
